Connect ChatGPT to your Steady publication, then ask it about your numbers in plain language. For example: "How many paying members did I gain last quarter?" or "What's my current trial conversion rate?" ChatGPT looks up the answer in your publication's stats.
You must be logged in to Steady as the owner of the publication.
You need a ChatGPT account with a plan that can create MCP apps.
One connection per publication. If you run several publications, connect each one separately. Every publication has its own address.
ChatGPT gets read access to your publication's information and stats: revenue, paying members, churn, trials and key statistics. It can't change anything in your publication, contact your members or move money. If you allow it on the approval screen, it can also send feedback about the connection to Steady.
ChatGPT only lets you add your own apps once developer mode is turned on.
In ChatGPT on the web, open Settings → Security and login.
Turn on Developer mode.
ChatGPT marks developer mode as higher risk because it lets you connect apps that OpenAI hasn't reviewed. Steady's connection is read-only, apart from optional feedback to Steady.
On Business, Enterprise or Education plans, your workspace admin may need to allow developer mode first.
In Steady, go to Settings → AI assistants and open the Connect an assistant tab.
Copy the MCP server URL.
In the ChatGPT row, click Open ChatGPT. ChatGPT's plugins page opens in a new window.
On the plugins page, click Add, then Create MCP App.
Enter a name, such as your publication's name, and paste the MCP server URL.
You don't need to change the authentication setting. ChatGPT already selects OAuth, which is what Steady uses.
Create the app.
Steady opens. Log in if Steady asks you to.
On the Allow access? screen, check the publication name and the permissions, then click Allow access. The button becomes clickable after a few seconds.
Back in ChatGPT, start a new chat, choose your Steady app from the developer-mode tools, and ask a question.
Codex, OpenAI's coding assistant, uses the same connection as ChatGPT. Under Manage assistants it can show up as Codex. Revoking ChatGPT's access ends Codex's access too.
Uninstalling the app in ChatGPT ends ChatGPT's access to your publication. Your approval still appears in Steady as Inactive, though. While it's there, reconnecting ChatGPT skips the Allow access? screen.
To remove the approval completely, revoke it in Steady: Settings → AI assistants → Manage assistants → Revoke. More in Manage and revoke AI assistants.
I can't find "Create MCP App". Check that developer mode is on and that you're using ChatGPT on the web with a supported plan.
Steady says I'm not allowed to connect. Make sure you're logged in to Steady as the publication's publisher.
ChatGPT didn't ask me to approve. You approved ChatGPT earlier and that approval is still in place. To be asked again, revoke it in Steady first.
